Spear, a 1973 graduate, is best remembered for his shooting prowess on the basketball court. He was a second team all-stater as a junior and was named the captain of the Chicago Daily News all-state team after his senior season, when he averaged 21-9 points per game. The honor of captain on the Chicago Daily News team equaled by the Mr. Basketball award given yearly by the Chicago Tribune.

During the 1972 QHS Thanksgiving Tournament, Spear also made a record 14 field goals in a game. He played college basketball at Illinois Wesleyan, where he was a four-year starter alongside future NBA standout Jack Sikma.
